The book, Alcoholics Anonymous is the textbook for the original 12-step recovery program which is affectionately known by members as “The Big Book” and now known by the same name.
It was authored by Bill W who was the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous with many of the first 100 members of the group; it was actually written by committee. Between Bill W’s group which is in New York and Dr. Bob, the other founder of A.A., in Akron, OH the book sent back and forth with the draft.
In the Christian-based Oxford Group and borrowed many of that group’s and other Christian organization’s principles informing the 12 steps, the founders of the 12-step program began their spiritual journey of recovery. Consequently, The Big Book is regarded with a measure of reverence by some people.
The Purpose of Alcoholics Anonymous Book
There are more than one hundred men and women Alcoholics Anonymous and they have recovered from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body, it is written in the forwarding of the book. The main purpose of this book is to show other alcoholics precisely how they can recover.
The Big Book is divided into two main parts to accomplish that purpose. The first part explains the 12 step program and how it can be used to overcome the effects of alcoholism. It is also known as the first 164 pages or the “original manuscript”.
The title “How it Works,” is the first part includes Chapter 5, it contains the 12 steps and is usually read at the opening of every A.A. meeting worldwide.
Read Aloud at Most A.A. Meetings
You can see stories written by some of the original members of A.A. relating their personal experiences with alcoholism and how they found a path to recovery in the second part of the AA book. Some of these stories have been deleted and others added in the four editions of the book. But the message is the same that the only is to practice the principles which are written in the 12 steps to fully recover from the effects of alcoholism. It can also lead the alcoholic to a spiritual awakening.
The book “Alcoholics Anonymous” has become more than a mere AA book for those whose lives have been changed by it. For them, it has become a life-long companion.
How It Works
We have seen rarely a person who has failed by following our directions. Who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program are the people who do not recover. That means which men and women are constitutionally incapable of being honest with their selves. It is unfortunate that they have been born that way and also naturally incapable of grasping and developing a way of life which demands rigorous honesty. Comparing to average people their chances are less.
The people who suffer from grave emotional and mental disorders can be recovered by their honesty and strong will. You are ready to follow directions when you have decided that what you want, what you have and are willing to go to any length to get it. You can look for an easier way or shortcut, but you won’t be able to find that.
